KVDU, DU’s Internet radio station, turns a year old today.
A year ago the campus sat silent, but now programming in a variety of formats is available for listeners. The Internet-based station has grown and gained a following.
For its birthday, the station plans to throw a party in the commons between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. today. KVDU staff will be giving away CDs, T-shirts, stickers, posters and of course cake. This past year KVDU’s biggest challenge has been overcoming the problem of being available only online.
Sarah Fisher, the station manager, said, “Internet radio just really hasn’t caught on because there are a lot of sound quality and high speed connection issues that make it difficult for a lot of people to listen.”
The station has big plans for the future. The next step is to gain a FCC license by raising funds and support. This will enable KVDU to be available on Denver-area radio. It will take a few years to get all the equipment to make this possible, Fisher said.
To listen to KVDU log onto kvdu.du.edu and click on ‘listen live’ in the upper left hand corner. The station offers a variety of DJs and music formats.
In the coming year, KVDU also hopes to add information and news programs to its regular music programming.
