Graduate student Wolf Wallendorf and sophomore Nina Karvonen were both named Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Skiing Association Skiers of the Week last Thursday.
Both Wallendorf and Karvonen earned the honors for their remarkable performances last weekend in the Nordic ski events, which led the Pioneer ski team to its third title of the season at the Denver Ski Invitational.
Wallendorf finished fourth in the 15K classical and finished second in the Freestyle Sprint. He is a six-time All-American and defending national champion who has earned three top-four finishes in the Classical. He also posted a top-10 score in both freestyle distance events earlier this year.
For the first time in her collegiate career, Karvonen was awarded the honor for matching her season-best finish of third place in the 10K Classical. She earned a third place finish in the Freestyle sprint event as well. Karvonen has been an important racer for Denver all season. She has had three top-four finishes in the Classical and has also posted a top-10 finish in both freestyle events earlier this year.
Denver will return to the slopes this weekend in hopes of earning its fourth consecutive title of the year when the Pioneers compete at the New Mexico Invitational in Taos, New Mexico.
