Fourth place finish at the Utah Invitational (second day)
What Went Right Skiing
The Pioneers began the 2011 ski season by defending their three consecutive national championships at the Utah Invitational. After a strong first day, the Pioneers slipped to fourth on the second day. However, freshman Sterling Grant showed lots of promise, winning the women’s slalom event on day two.
What Went Wrong
After falling behind 1-0 in the The men’s slalom racers didn’t perform as well as they needed to with no member finishing higher than No. 17 last Sunday. The team finishes the first weekend’s event with only 412 points, which places them fourth behind Colorado, Utah and New Mexico when the invitational reopens in two weeks.
Up Next
Denver travels to the Montana Invitational on Jan. 15-16. The following weekend, the Nordic events of the Utah Invitational will commence.
Swimming and Diving
Update
The Pioneers are coming off a three-week break. The last time they competed, both the men’s and women’s teams dominated that the FAU Invitational which was held Dec. 18 in Boca Raton, Fla. Both teams took care of Florida Atlantic, Cincinnati and Air Force.
Up Next
DU hosts UNLV and Air Force this Friday at El Pomar Natatorium. The events begin at 3 p.m. when the diving competition begins followed by the swimming events. The Pioneers head to the Shamrock Invitational on Jan. 28 following the home meet this week.
