The DU club cycling team concluded its Spring regular season by finishing third in the Rocky Mountain Cycling Conference last weekend in Grand Junction, Colo. The Pioneers finished behind only Colorado College and Mesa State College.

Leading the way for the DU team was the men’s A time trial team, who won their respective conference championship, edging Colorado State University by eight seconds in the 11 mile race. Taking part on that team were DU students Taylor Sheldon, Steve Forbes, Eric Moore and Grant Goerzen.

Also putting in an impressive performance for the DU squad was sophomore Amy Secor, who was the women’s B individual conference champion.

This wrapped up a compelling regular season for the club team. One highlight to the season, according to Goerzen, was when teammate Sheldon won the Air Force Road Race on April 16. The race consisted a men’s A field of 52 riders from Division I and II schools.

“Overall it was a very good season,” said Goerzen. “We had a lot of young riders who trained hard all winter, and their hard work paid off.”

Goerzen said that the team ended the season with eight men’s A riders competing, which is double their total from last season.

This season, the Pioneers hosted their first ever race, which was held in the parking lot of Invesco Field.

The team now looks forward to the National race in which they had six male riders qualify for. Sheldon, Forbes, Moore, Goerzen and Joe Lewis all advanced through their work in the conference tournament.

The six men will compete in the Team Time Trial, which consists of two races: the Road race, which covers a distance of 85 miles; and the Criterium, which is a 65 minute race. Four riders compete in each race.

The Pioneers hope to improve on their ninth place finish from a year ago, when they head to Lawrence, Kan. for the national event that begins May 11.
