Today it was announced that junior volleyball player Alyssa Hampton received the Sun Belt Conference sportswoman of the year award. The Clarion received this report from the DU sports media relations office. One male and female athlete from each of the 13 member schools of the conference are nominated for the award.
The award is given to a student-athlete that excels not only in competition, but also in the classroom, community and other extracuricular activities.
“I was surprised. I am honored to receive the schools nomination, I knew very little about the award itself,” said a smiling Hampton.
The Parkville, Mo. native currently has a 3.99 GPA in the classroom and is majoring in finance and marketing with a minor in legal studies. Hampton also represents the athletic department on the AUSA senate as well as being the president of the student athletic advisory committee (SAAC). Hampton is also in the university honors program, the DU morpar board (recognizes top 1% of students) and the golden key society. Oh yeah and don’t forget along with academics and all these organizations she also has a college volleyball career to attend to.
“I love to be busy. I enjoy having my hand in a bunch of different things, there is never a dull moment.”
When asked about how she manages her time, “I have a lot of support from my friends and family that keep me sane and help me to slow down.”
Hampton played in every game this season for the Pioneers recording eight kills along with 41 assists.
“It is good to be known for something, to be involved with something and just build relationships with people.”
“Throughout my almost full three years here the campus is so willing to accept involvement , so hungry for people to get involved and has a lot of untapped potential.”
Potential that has allowed the student-athlete not only to provide leadership on the court, but in the classroom and extracuricular activities as well.
