Time to dust off those old video cameras and start practicing your cab nine nosegrab.

The first annual Alpine Club Outdoor Film and Photography Contest will take place this spring. However, this contest seeks to encapsulate much more than film a la Warren Miller.

Each student can submit one entry in each of three categories: motion picture/films, action/sports, photography and landscape/still photography.

The general theme of the contest is anything related to the outdoors, which can include scenery, activities, abstract photography, even documentaries.

Programs Director Theo Jordan wants students to realize that the Alpine Club is much more than just skiing and snowboarding.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three entries in each category.

The Alpine Club is currently securing deals with Edgeworks and Christy Sports for prizes, such as photography equipment, including a new camera, or outdoor equipment, including snowboarding gear and backpacking equipment.

Entries will be judged by a panel of three Alpine Club officers and three University of Denver professors.

Scores will be determined by artistic ability, quality, flow, and creativity and uniqueness. Bad taste, which includes excessive profanity, alcohol and tobacco use, will incur penalty points.

“We’re looking for people that can embody what the Alpine Club embodies: having fun outdoors, enjoying it, and appreciating it for what it is,” said Jordan.

Andy Librande, a club officer, said that this project was about discovering the abilities that students have.

The Alpine Club will be constructing a display for the photographic entries.

Members hope to involve the student body with the outdoors more.

Entries are due by Wednesday, April 27, but students who submit their projects by April 6 are eligible for discounts on Alpine Club apparel.

Films must be less than 20 minutes in length and submitted in proper DVD or VHS format.

Photographs must be in normal 8×10 printed format.

For more information on how to enter, check out the Alpine Club Web site at DUAlpineClub.org/contest.html.

Entry forms must be downloaded and filled out to accompany a project.

Projects can be submitted at any Alpine Club meeting. The club meets on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. at the Lindsey Auditorium.

The grand unveiling gala will take place May 11 at 8 p.m., when the films will be screened in the Lindsey Auditorium.

Afterwards, the photographic entries will be on display on the Driscoll Bridge.

“Everyone who passes through Driscoll can see the student’s talent, which is important,” said Jordan.

She is hopeful that this contest will be huge publicity for the Alpine Club – and hopefully will get students who would not normally come to meetings interested in the club.

“We’re excited about doing it and seeing what people have to show us,” she said.
