Greeks will be “sailing into spring” this week at Greek unity events and service projects.
The week offers activities ranging from the brainy – a trivia contest -to pure brawn – a tug-a-war.
DU’s five sorority and nine fraternity chapters are hosting Greek Week and invite all Greek members to participate in events today through Friday to promote Greek unity and partake in community service. The theme is ‘Greeks at Sea.’
The Greek Council is sponsoring the activities. Co-chairs for the events are Jim Francescon, Adrienne Estes and Linsey Hempel. Large retailers and restaurant chains such as Target, Costco, Spicy Pickle, Chipotle, Red Bull, Jamba Juice, and Qdoba are sponsors.
Francescon of Sigma Chi said this week-long event is a great opportunity for Greek members to meet new people, create new friendships and build unity among the Greek community here on campus.
About 20 percent of undergraduates are involved with Greek Life.
Tomorrow there is a multicultural Greek fair starting at 11:30 a.m. on the Driscoll Lawn and a Greek auction to raise money for a charity at 8 p.m. in Lindsay Auditorium in Sturm Hall. Each house will bring an item to auction off and the house that raises the most money will choose the charity.
Tomorrow’s activities include a community service activity of making peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwiches for day laborers. Sandwiches will be made on the Driscoll Lawn and this event is mandatory for all Greek Life members. The night ends with a game of Greek trivia.
Thursday the events continue with soccer, volleyball and flag football tournaments.
Greek Week will finish off with a bang on Friday at noon with what Francescon considers to be the week’s most anticipated event-the Greek Olympics. This includes a barbecue by the DU Grilling Society, tug-a-war, relays and other games. The event ends with Greek Night at the DU lacrosse game.
“I’m looking forward to all the events throughout the week, especially the Greek Olympics on Friday,” said Ann-Charlotte Wade, member of Tri Delta.
