New business Fuhgidabowdit Pizza on University Boulevard serves up as much personality as it does pizza.

Owner Matt McClellan has used his easy going attitude to create a haven for pizza lovers, sports fans and stressed students alike.

The pizzeria’s unusual name was born as easily as taking down a quick slice of pepperoni.

“I was driving down to the Cherry Creek mall kicking around some ideas for the name,” said McClellan. “My buddy kept bringing up the same dumb name over and over again. So I told him ‘Its not going to happen, Fuhgidabowdit!'”

Once McClellan said it, he and his buddy knew the name search was over.

The restaurant located on the 2000 block of University Blvd. serves up classic New York-style pizza by the pie or by the slice. McClellan fashioned the restaurant to have a relaxed environment where he and his buddies could serve up slices to anyone and everyone.

Wearing an Avalanche hat and sitting at one of the restaurant’s few small tables, McClellan said, “I wanted to have a place where people could just go and chill. It’s like a sports pizza shop, stop in, grab a slice and watch a game with me.”

New York Yankees memorabilia adorns the walls. Across from the open kitchen hangs a photo of the Statue of Liberty next to an autographed Don Mattingly jersey.

The counter is the only thing separating the customer from the dough-twirling action and huge ovens that fill the place with tantalizing aromas of baking pizza pies.

McClellan is not only the owner, but also a patron of his own resaurant. He claims to eat about three large pies per week.

“I’ve worked in restaurants before and I always got sick of the food,” he said. “I don’t know what it is about these pizzas; I just eat it because it’s good.”

The students agree. DU senior Courtney Housam had nothing but good things to say about Fuhgidabowdit.

“I’m from Philly but I visit New York often,” she said. “The pizza here is authentic New York-style pizza. It’s divine.”

Christine Oddy, a junior at DU, also enjoys the new restaurant near campus.

“I had the calzone last time,” she commented. “It was so good all my friends had to have a bite.”

Whole pizzas at Fuhgidabowdit run between $10 and $16. Slices go for $2.

McClellan couldn’t be happier with his shop but he doesn’t take all the credit for his good fortune.

“I love where I am,” he said. “There’s a great community here and I love my location. I don’t take it for granted though I know I owe everything to the students, without them I’m nothing.”

With DU students buying between 25 and 50 pies a day, it appears the feeling is mutual.
