Students gathered on Campus Green Friday afternoon for the Daniels Campus Classic, an event featured as part of May Days. Despite the low temperature, the campus golf tournament drew 15 teams who played the five-hole campus course that began on Campus Green and ended at the Daniels College of Business.

Several student organizations from the Daniels College of Business came together to create the event. They were looking for a fun, outdoor event that would attract many students, and soon after the campus golf idea was born.

Students weaved throughout the DU campus, aiming their bright yellow tennis balls at large blow-up cactuses. Team members could be heard chanting “happy Cinco de Mayo” between shots as well as an occasional “fore!”

Students competed for gift certificates from The Washington Park Grille as well as the Cherry Cricket. In addition to competing for the lowest combined team score, students also competed for the prize of best dressed. From tall argyle socks and V-neck sweaters to a full Batman costume, students got into the spirit of the tournament through dress.

Charly Hoehn, a member of the DU women’s golf team, said the tournament as a “good opportunity to show off my golf skills.” Other students, like Devon Ukeless, just simply wanted “to have fun and hang out with friends.”

The first foursome teed off at 2 p.m. The first tee-box showcased dozens of great swings. Danny Wax, a member of the DU men’s golf team, felt that he started off strong and that his conclusion of the first hole was “well executed, despite the unforgiving grass of Driscoll.”

Although the weather was not ideal for a spring golf tournament, 15 student foursomes participated in the event. The competition was tough; a three-hole playoff between junior MikeB Tanaka and sophomore MaxB Jaeger eventually decided the winner.

Tanaka came out on top, winning the Washington Park Grille gift certificate for his number one team. Jaeger and his teammates won the Cherry Cricket gift certificate. The striking outfits of the team from ZBT earned them the title of best dressed and DU Nalgene bottles.

After concluding the fifth hole, students were invited to swipe their meal card at the south of the border fiesta near Daniels in the spirit of Cinco de Mayo. The fiesta was followed by an awards presentation.

The event was part of May Days and was sponsored by DUPB. The Daniels Entrepreneurship Society and the Daniels Christian Community organized the event with the help of the Daniels Administration as well as the Student Athletic Council.

Grant Goerzen, a student organizer for the event, has high hopes for the future of the Daniels Campus Classic. “HopefullyB nextB yearB ifB theB weatherB cooperates, we willB haveB aB lotB moreB peopleB comeB out,” said Goerzen.
