Jim Bruer, a comedian featured on “Saturday Night Live” and in the film “Half Baked,” brought his unique brand of comedy to Denver last week when his “Lighten Up” tour hit Comedy Works in downtown Denver.
The show was very, very funny.
Bruer, who has said in interviews that he feels most creative in Denver, seemed right at home as he performed various impersonations and joked for an hour and a half.
The audience of about 200 exploded with laughter when Bruer did his “goat boy” impression, which he made famous on SNL.
Bruer entertained the crowd by talking about the first time he got high by taking mescaline with his friend “the wizard,” the prototype of the guy everyone knows, who has done every drug there is.
Bruer said he felt sorry for the guardian angels that had to take care of him that night.
Another highlight of the show was Bruer’s dialogue about his Dad. Someone in the audience yelled, “Bring him out!” to much applause.
To everyone’s surprise, Bruer’s father was actually present at the show and managed to handle the attention quite well. He simply sat on a barstool, sipped his beer and shook his head.
When asked if he was single, Bruer’s father responded, “No, but I’m horny.” As a result, Bruer collapsed on stage with laughter and said, “I won’t tell Mom about this.”
His father shrugged and drank some more beer.
Bruer also talked about his days on SNL and getting the chance to meet some of his idols, including Sting, Sylvester Stalone, Jack Nickelson, Robert DiNero and Joe Peci, who Bruer said “scared me the most.” He then did an impersonation of Peci.
Bruer described how Jow Peci had been very upset with the way that Bruer had been portraying him on television lately.
Bruer said that during his meeting with Peci he apologized and told Peci he would never do the skit again. To which Peci responded, “I flew all the way out here. We’re doing the skit.”
Bruer’s show was hilarious and left the audience feeling a little “high.”
Watch for Jim Bruer’s new CD “Smoke and Breu” which is avilable in stores now.
