The Mortar Board Senior Honor Society received the national organization’s Golden Torch award for going beyond the minimum requirements with its community and school involvement during the 2005-2006 school year.

The award, the highest given, was presented to the Kedros chapter at Mortar Board’s national conference in July.

To receive the Golden Torch Award, chapters must fulfill several requirements including displaying strong goals as an individual organization and participating in campus involvement and service projects.

Chapters must also maintain contact with the organization at the regional and national levels and demonstrate the ideals of Mortar Board.

“The Kedros chapter of Mortar Board received the Golden Torch award for its amazing embodiment of these ideals of scholarship, leadership and service at [the University of Denver],” said Alicia Notestone, communications coordinator at the Mortar Board national office. B

Kedros members mentored local elementary school students, helped with the Boys and Girls Club of Denver, volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and participated in raising awareness and funds through Relay for Life and other walks and runs.

On campus, the society sponsored the “Departmental Donuts” award to the department that helped students beyond normal expectations.

Chapter members also worked with other campus groups like AUSA, DUPB and Golden Key to nominate last year’s Faculty of the Year recipient.

The Golden Torch Award was given to 18 other chapters of Mortar Board around the country, including two other Colorado schools, Colorado College and the University of Northern Colorado.

Other chapters to receive the award included the University of San Diego chapter and the Carnegie Mellon chapter.

DU’s Mortar Board chapter was nominated in part by the section coordinator of Mortar Board. The section includes five Colorado chapters, two Utah chapters and one Wyoming chapter.
