Finances of Denver and China
The Denver-China forum will continue Wednesday with the lecture: “Could China’s approach to economic transition avoid financial collapse?” from 6-9:15 p.m. in Renaissance Room South.
Speakers at the event will include Pieter Bottelier and Ziyun He.
Bottelier is the former chief of World Bank’s Resident Mission in Beijing and lectures at Harvard University.
He is the assistant dean of the school of finance at the University of Interantional Business and Economics in Beijing.
Registration is required to attend the event, which will also include a reception and dinner froml 6-7:30 p.m. The forum will be held 7:45-9:15 p.m.

Dreaming and talking about trees at DU
The University of Denver will host the Fall Quarter Provost’s Lecture and Luncheon about the future plans for trees on campus Wednesday form 11:45 a.m. to 12:55 p.m. in Driscoll University Center Ballroom.
David Christophel will be presenting information on the new five-year plan for trees at DU in his lecture: “I Dream of Trees.”
Christophel is the Edna Biggs Kurtz chair in botany and the director of the Chester M. Alter Arboretum. Early in October, Chancellor Daniel Ritchie approved Christophel’s plan for the arboretum at the university. Christophel plans to study the trees at DU and develop the arboretum.
Christophel specializes in tertiary fossil plants and rain forest evolution. He is currently developing courses in flowering plant diversity and in paleobiology.Reservations are required to attend the event.For information call X12209.
Show business play opens this weekend
The Department of Theatre will present the fall play, Anton in Show Business opening Thursday at 8 p.m. in Margery Reed Hall.
The play is a twist on the traditional play as it will be a behind-the-scenes look at how a play is produced. The play depicts a cast of characters putting on a play. A starlet form Hollywood, a schoolteacher from Texas and a Off, Off, Off-Broadway actress are the main characters who attempt to produce Chekov’s “Three Sisters.”
The play will run Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Nov. 8 and 9 at 8 p.m. and Nov. 10 at 2 p.m. Family and alumni night will be Friday.
Opening weekend is free to university students, staff and faculty. Regularly, admission is $10 for general admission, $8 for seniors, students handicapped and alumni and $8 per person for groups of 10 or more.
This will be the last performance for the Department of Theatre in Margery Reed Hall before it begins performing in the Elizabeth Byron flexible theatre in the Newman Center for the Performing Arts.

Equality in sports
The University of Denver will host a day of celebrating Title IX Friday beginning at 8 a.m. with registration on the second floor of Sturm Hall.
Title IX is an educational amendment, passed in 1972, that prohibits sexual discrimination in schools in acedemics or athletics. This year is the 25th anniversary of Title IX being passed.
Since the passing of Title IX, several statistics have shown an increase of women’s sports and women receiving advanced degrees such as law, medical or doctorial degrees.
The event will include several speakers throughout the day. Barry Gomberg, director of Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action, Weber State University, will speak on ethics in educaitonal equity leadership; Camille Flenniken, a DU studen/athlete, and her grandmother, Lillian Gutierrez and Dottie Lamm will speak of their generational experiences.
The day will have a variety of events that will explore issues such as sexual harrassment in schools and colleges, the athletic aspects in schools and education and changes in women’s education.

Bridge project explores politics
In coordination with the celebration of Title IX former U.S. Rep. Patricia Shcroeder will speak at the Bridges to the Future event 7-8:30 p.m. Friday in Sturm Auditiorium.
Schroeder and a panel will discuss politiacl and personal values at the event.
The event will be facilitated by Jean Galloway, president of the Galloway Group and the panel will consist of Troy Eid, executive director of the Colorado Department Personnel and General Support Services, Jesse Thomas, community activist and former Republican candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives, Adrea Love, president of DU’s Young Democrats, and Traci Butler, political science major at Colorado State University.
Schroeder is the president and CEO of the Association of American Publishers, a national trade organization of the U.S. book publishing industry.
She also held several positions during her 24 years in congress including Dean of Congressional Women, chair of the House Select Committee on Children, Youth and Families and was the first woman in history to serve on the House Armed Services Committee.
