The DU women’s soccer team won a pair of Sun Belt Conference games this past weekend at Pioneer Field.
The Pioneers scored a total of 10 goals while giving up only one goal in consecutive games against Florida Atlantic University and Florida International University.
Last Friday, DU’s Taryn Hemmings, a junior, opened the game by running the pitch and scoring within the first minute over Florida Atlantic University.
The Pioneers were playing a strong game on all counts and didn’t let the Owls build any offense through the entire first half. While they were pushing hard, DU pushed back harder.
Seniors Lleane Grimditch and Holly Huppert brought the lead to 3-0 for DU by the break.
In the second half, the mid afternoon heat didn’t slow the women down who put on a strong offence by scoring three more goals while the Owls managed only one.
Every time the Owls pushed across the field, the Pioneers quickly countered and sent them back to their side.
Barring one goal, the Owls had almost no offensive chance; as for defense, their goalkeeper Jessica Badders was constantly on guard as DU served out a total of eight shots only three of which were blocked.
The Pioneers finshed the game with a 5-1 victory.
On Sunday, Pioneer Soccer defeated Florida International, 5-0.
Senior Dani Wiley scored the winning shot to bring her fourth shutout of the season, and walked away from the game with yet another five-point win.
“Were clicking on all cylinders” said Head Coach Jeff Hooker, “I’m just so glad to see the whole team playing so well, we’re playing unselfish soccer. The team is very focused right now. The depth and balance of the team is just great. Like the games we played last week, there is no one star player, everyone is working so well together.”
The Women’s soccer team will be on the road this weekend competing in another round of theSun Belt Conference in Alabama.
They will be playing against South Alabama on Friday October 6 and at Troy on Sunday October 8. They will be home again on the October 13.
