Moving their way into the Denver club and promotion scene, two University of Denver entrepreneurs are changing the social climate at DU, while learning practical business philosophies in a real-world setting.
Dave Lawrence and Max Goldberg created a company called LG Promotions. The goal of the company is to throw great parties, while promoting the downtown Denver social scene within the DU population.
“We are in it for experience and a good time,” said Lawrence and Goldberg.
The two students are gaining business knowledge through their dealings with owners, and issues like financing, marketing and advertising.
The two students were inspired to begin their own company after a successful fundraiser venture with DU’s dance team last November at Citrus Champagne and Vodka Lounge downtown.
“We created and distributed flyers, as well as invested money for promotion expenses,” Lawrence said.
According to Goldberg, the business venture has taught him more than he could learn in a classroom setting.
“This side of business gives me a lot of real life lessons. I’m learning how to make the next event better, and I’m learning from the mistakes of things we’ve done wrong,” Goldberg said.
Indeed some things have gone wrong. The last LG party was Feb. 7 at Citrus.
“We had a one and a half hour wait. Next time we will provide a bigger venue, have separate lines and let our guests prepay so they won’t have to wait in line,” said Goldberg.
The two promoters also voiced their concern about last week’s Clarion article on bar parties.
“All bar parties are not barred. Our parties are not fraternity-affiliated, and we believe that it is everyone’s individual responsibility to not binge drink at the parties we throw,” Goldberg said.
According to them, you cannot blame the party throwers for binge drinking.
“If you do have a problem drinking, go to an AA meeting and don’t come to a bar party,” Lawrence said.
Lawrence and Goldberg advise students to follow-suit with their real-world experience.
“Don’t wait to get out of college to use your major,” Lawrence said.
The next LG Production party is scheduled after Spring Break. The date and location of the party, titled “Forever Spring,” has not been released yet.
