Poetry reading

Two writers will share their words and thoughts with students this week.

Laird Hunt, author of The Impossibly, and Eleni Sikelianos, author of Earliest Worlds, will read their works 8 p.m. Friday in the Humanities Institute Room, Sturm Hall 286.

Refreshments will be served at a reception afterwards.

DAM colorful exhibit hits town

The Denver Art Museum will open a Pierre Bonnard exhibt March 1.

The exhibit will feature more than 100 works by the painter and will run through May 25.

Bonnard was a colorist during the same time as Pierre Auguste Renior, Claude Monet and Toulouse-Lautrec.

Though not as well known as his comtemporaries, Bonnard was called “the greatest among us” by Matisse after Bonard’s death.

Bonard is known for using the “effects of color and light to express ideas of memory and desire” in his works.

The exhibit consists of works from 50 different galleries and musesums.

A seperate ticket is required for the exhibit and may be purchased online at www.denverartmuseum.org or at the DAM box office.

Continuing DAM exhibts include “African Renaissance: New Forms, Old Images” through April 27. This exhibit shows the artistic works of the Yoruba people and contemporary Nigerian artist Moyo Ogundipe. The different works will be displayed together to show breaks with tradition and the continuation of tradition in African art.

“Secrets From a Chinese Garden” will also be showing through Sept. 28. This exhibit consists of robes from the Charlotte Hill Grant collection of the museum, and showcases the variety of art that the Chinese used on the robes.

Internships available

Students interested in peace and justice can apply for internships with The Denver Justice & Peace Committee.

The organization is currently seeking interns to work as an education program intern, a Colombia research intern, legislative intern and Venezuela research intern.

DJPC is a “grassroots organization working for lasting peace and economic justice in Latin America.”

Since 1979 the organization has been “promoting change through education, solidarity projects, legislative advocacy and nonviolent action campaigns.”

Interns will interact with staff members of the DJPC and some will also particpate in community outreach programs at local high schools.

The commitment periods of the interns average four months.

Nussbaum speaks on education

Martha Nussbaum will present a lecture 7:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday in Sturm Hall Auditorium.

Nussbaum will discuss “Liberal Education and Global Responsibility.” Nussbaum is professor of law and ethics at the University of Chicago.

The event is free to the public.

Banquet for hunger to be held

The Hunger Banquet will be held March 6 at 5:30 p.m.

The banquet will be held to educate people about the number of people who suffer and die from hunger and the lack of healthcare.

Those wishing to attend must reserve a spot by Thursday.

Volunteers needed to help MS

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Colorado Chapter is looking for a helping hand.

The organization is looking for volunteers to help them with their three major fundraisers.

The organization is looking for volunteers for the following events and days: the MS Walk from May 3-10, the Great West MS 150 Bike Tour from July 12-13 and the three-day MS Challenge Walk from Sept. 5-7.

Volunteers are needed to help participates register, as route marshals and to hand out refreshments.

Classical four performs

Tonight will be a night of classical music on campus.

The Lamont faculty string quartet, The Da Vinci Quartet, will perform several pieces tonight from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in Sturm Hall Auditorium.

The quartet will perform Mozart’s Quartet in D minor, K. 421; Szymanowski’s Quartet Number One, Op. 38 and Beethoven’s Quartet in F Major, Op. 59 Number One.

The event is $12 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. For more information call the Lamont Concert Line at x16412.

Flo’s Underground will also be performing Friday from 5-7 p.m. in room 121 at the Newman Center for Performing Arts.

The performance will feature vocal jazz and commercial music jazz.

The International House will offer free coffee and refreshments to students from 6-10 p.m. Thursdays.

A groundbreaking ceremony will be held for the Merle Catherine Chambers Center for the Advancement of Women at 10:30 a.m. on March 5 at the corner of South High Street and Asbury Avenue.

The event is being sponsored by the Women’s College of the University of Denver.
