“You say you want a revolution? Well, you know…” it’s right here at DU. A couple of weeks ago, a student lamented in these very pages that there are no protests going on at DU–yet another sign of the apparent apathy on our campus and a tragic state of affairs with war becoming an increasing reality.

This week, I am here to tell you that the opportunity to make your voice heard is right here, if you choose to accept the challenge to raise it. I should mention that activism, and especially protest, is risky business, but also something that is totally possible. You have to feel safe and comfortable before committing to any cause. Like: Am I going to be the only one marching? Am I the only one that feels this way? Or, (ironically) am I just too cool to be voicing my opinion? True, these are real fears, but also weak excuses to not put yourself on the line.

Take for example (and the first way that you can become involved) the story of a woman named Kathleen who has been using her mornings to walk up and down University carrying her anti-war message. She knew she had to do something, and was hoping others would be inspired and join her, too, but it was many weeks that she walked alone. But now you can join her, and the groups (yes, university groups) of students and faculty that walk that way on Tuesdays at 4:45 p.m. or on Thursdays at 8 a.m.

See, someone else could do it alone, and now you have a safe group to join in as well.

Or if walking isn’t you niche, flex some theatrical muscle. Contact Devon Adams at dcadams@du.edu and become part of the reading of Lysistrata on March 3. Then again, you could also contact DU Peace at dunowar@hotmail.com and join them for larger rallies like the one in Colorado Springs this past weekend. Maybe the anti-war angle isn’t your thing.

Then find your voice, gather some others, and make it known which side you stand for. There are plenty of groups and organizations out there that can give you that safe space for you to belong. But know that, if you want a revolution, there are things going on at DU here and now that need the voices of the many.
