DUPB has high hopes for the success of Winter Carnival despite rumors of low participation and last year’s reports of trashed condos and evicted students.

Megan Knight, one of the three co-directors of the Traditions Committee, is responsible for the events at this year’s Winter Carnival. In response to questions about declining participation, Knight promptly dismissed rumors.

“I am not sure of the exact numbers from last year, but this year we have about 175 students going with us up to Winter Park compared to last year that had around 200,” she said. “So, in all reality, it is about the same number.”

Knight also plans to tackle the issue of students damaging condominiums in the Hi Country Haus complex, the site of this year’s lodgings. The Hi Country Haus is located in Winter Park, just two miles from the ski lifts at Winter Park resort. Knight and DUPB plan to take strict security measures to combat condo trashing.

“Every student is required to put down a damage deposit. If they want their money back at the end of the weekend they will have to return the condo in the same shape it was in when they entered it,” said Knight. “Also, DUPB staff members equipped with walkie talkies will be stationed at the main headquarters around the clock. If anything needs to be assessed they will be there to do so along with the Winter Park’s own security team.”

“Each year we try to improve the way we run our Winter Carnival events so that our numbers will continue to build in terms of attendance and to keep up with, and constantly entertain, the students here at DU,” she continued. “At the same time, we try to keep the same events and programs around in order to maintain the meaning behind our committees title.”

Knight took over the Traditions Committee this year. Brad Wiles formerly held the position.
