DU will host events throughout the week, beginning on Jan. 18, in honor of Marin Luther King Jr. Day.
Faven Habte, vice president of the DU Black Student Alliance (BSA) and co-chair of the MLK Jr. planning committee, explained that the organization meets to plan various events, such as these, for the DU community.
The BSA has planned four opportunities to encourage DU students to reflect on the impact of Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy, said Habte.
On Jan. 18 there will be a Martin Luther King parade in Denver beginning at 9 a.m. This event is city wide and involves various organizations across the state. The parade route begins at City Park.
There will be a Community Service Fair on Jan. 21 beginning at 11 a.m. The fair will run for three hours and will offer information to students about community service opportunities in the Denver area.
“Being offered by the DU Religious Council, this event exemplifies the community engagement component of Martin Luther King Jr.’s civil rights work,” said Habte.
At 5 p.m. that same day, the BSA will be holding the DU Dreams Celebration. The night will involve a keynote speaker, a video documentary created by DU students and recitation of one of Martin Luther King Jr.’s speeches.
On Jan. 22 the BSA will team up with the Center for Community Engagement and service learning to host a Day of Service. This day will include a tour of the Blair-Caldwell Library, lunch and an opportunity to volunteer at various locations.
“It is crucial to bring campus wide attention to Martin Luther King Jr. Day because so many students fail to recognize the significance of this holiday beyond getting a day long break from classes,” said Habte. “The various events being offered throughout the week allow for students to not only reflect, but to take an active part in celebrating the work that Martin Luther King Jr. began so many years ago. We hope to see everyone at these great events,” said Habte.
