The Midnight Juggernauts played the Hi-Dive last Tuesday to an amped up and enthusiastic crowd. The band offers a unique mix of dance based indie rock with psychedelic, space-age sound.

The band relies heavily on a combination of synthesizers and strong percussion.

The concert featured songs off its soon-to-be-released album Dystopia, which drops May 27.

The venue itself was packed. Midnight Juggernauts played a variety of songs from their album, including a couple of singles.

The band mixed it up with some of its darker material as well.

People were on their feet and dancing, or at least pulsing, to the music the entire night. With the band’s unique fusion of techno, disco and rock, it was hard to resist.

The group is based out of Melbourne, Australia, and gathered a large following through MySpace.

Originally comprised of brothers Vincent and Andy Juggernaut, the group adopted Daniel Stricker to add a third dimension to their music.

They recently signed with the label Astralwerks, aptly named for the type of music created by Midnight Juggernauts.

The band’s success is incapable of doing anything but increasing.

The very unassuming Daniel Stricker (drums/vox) was able to take a break just before going on stage in France and talk about their ongoing tour and upcoming album release.

Q: So what exactly are you up to right now, and how’s the tour going?

DS: Well, right now, we’re playing this music festival in France. It’s been quite nice really, relaxing in the French countryside. We’re actually on a world tour at the moment. It started in the U.K., and we’ll be on the road for another 7 months. It’s just all so new to us. I mean we’ve been to North America before, we did our recording here in November, and a couple shows with Justice.

Q: How was it playing with Justice?

DS: It was a lot of fun. They’re a great group, and we got a lot of good introductions to the industry through them.

Q: So how is this tour different from your past tours?

DS: Well this is our first headlining tour, so that’s exciting. It really is an adventure, meeting new friends, and we enjoy traveling as well.

Q: And you’re liking the States so far?

DS: Yeah, it’s actually quite different from Australia. It’s so much fun, and we never realized how big your country is! We’ll be driving along, and I’m thinking we must’ve gone at least several states, but it’s only a centimeter on the map.

Q: So how would you describe your music to someone who had never heard it before?

DS: It’s pretty broad really. It’s got elements from lots of different types of music, like indie, jazz and some cinematic soundtrack elements. We have a wide sonic palette to play with.

Q: Finally, how would you say this album has evolved from your past work?

DS: Well the early stuff was a lot more raw, this is much more polished. It has different moods; it’s more mature-like a fine wine, better with age.
