Seven-time Tour de France winner, Lance Armstrong, will be on campus today in a special LiveStrong Day event, which will take place on Driscoll Lawn from 2-4 p.m.

Armstrong’s time on campus and in Denver will be one of his four stops in a daylong cross-country trek to support LiveStrong Day.

LiveStrong Day is a one-day event hosted by the Lance Armstrong Foundation, whose purpose is to raise awareness and funding to fight cancer.

This year there will be more than 500 events taking place in communities across the country.

Volunteers in each community are responsible for organizing each LiveStrong Day activity.

“We got really lucky that they chose Denver as one of the stops this year for Lance Armstrong,” said Kerrie Rueda, assistant director of campus activities.

The event will feature talks by DU-affiliated cancer survivors, tables with information and resources about cancer prevention, statistics and support, voter registration stations, lemonade stands and Lance Armstrong Foundation petition signing stations. Armstrong is tentatively scheduled to be on Driscoll Lawn from 2:45-3:45 p.m.

The event at DU is organized by Rueda, who became involved with the Lance Armstrong Foundation when her father was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

“My dad had been an avid cyclist and Lance Armstrong fan, so he started wearing a Livestrong bracelet when he was sick. My husband gave me a Livestrong bracelet, and at some point I decided that I needed to do what it actually said on the bracelet,” said Rueda.

“Since I couldn’t help my dad, I decided to help the community by raising funds to fight cancer.”

T-shirts will also be available at the event for $15 and all proceeds go to the Lance Armstrong Foundation. There will also be collection cans available.

The event is open to the public and free; no tickets are required.

Members of the Denver community are encouraged to come as well.

A bike valet station will be available at the event for those who wish to ride their bikes to campus. The valet will be open from 1:30-4:30 p.m. and is free of charge, but donations to the Lance Armstrong Foundation are welcome.

The event is also hosted by AUSA, DUPB, Greek Council and Go Vote.
