Skier makes Junior Worlds team
DU men’s skier Andrew Dougherty has earned a spot on the 2011 FIS (International Ski Federation) Nordic World Junior Ski Championships.
Doughety, a sophomore, will represent the United States in Otepaa, Estonia on Jan. 23-30.
After placing third and sixth among juniors at the U.S National Championships earlier this month, Dougherty qualified for the national team.
There will be a six-man team representing the best skiers under the age of 20.
Dougherty is coming off a freshman campaign for the Pioneers where he helped the school claim its third straight national title.
He competed in all six invitations and the NCAA Championships, but has yet to ski for DU’s Nordic team this season.
Dougherty travels to Finland today for a training session with the U.S. Ski Team before departing to Estonia to compete against the best junior skiers in the world.
