DU Ranked No.11 in preseason poll
A year after being picked as the preseason No. 1 team, the Denver Pioneers have dropped out of the preseason top 10, according to a national poll released by USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine on Monday afternoon.
The Pioneers rank fourth among teams from the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA), behind No. 2 North Dakota, No. 6 St. Cloud State and No. 9 Minnesota Duluth.
As for the No. 1 overall team, the defending NCAA men’s ice hockey champion Boston College takes over where Denver was ranked this time last season.
Campbell chosen as a ‘Primetime Player of the Week’
According to College Soccer 360, DU women’s soccer sophomore goalkeeper Lara Campbell was named as one of CS360’s Primetime Players of the Week for Sept. 20-26,
Campbell, an Alaskan native, recorded two shutouts last weekend, helping the Pioneers to a 2-0 Sun Belt Conference (SBC) record through the first week of conference play.
Campbell is having a stellar season, limiting the opposing team to one goal or less in each of DU’s eight victories.
As for the stat sheet, the sophomore finished with 13 recorded saves last weekend, while the Pioneers (8-2) beat Western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee in a pair of road games.
The wins vaulted the Pioneers into the No. 25 in this week’s Soccer America Poll.
Last season, Campbell started 21 games while Denver cruised to their fourth consecutive SBC postseason title.
For her work in the postseason, she was placed on the All-Sun Belt Conference Tournament Team.
She saved more than .800 percent of balls shot at her in 2009.
Ironically enough, the Pioneers regular season begins when they host the Eagles in a series at Magness Arena on Oct. 15-16.
Rounding out the top five are Miami University (OH), Michigan and Yale, respectively.
The Pioneers’ schedule includes six potential series against teams ranked within the preseason top 15.
After the home opener against BC, the Pioneers host No. 13 Wisconsin the following weekend. Then, the team travels to Grand Forks, N.D. on Oct 29-30 to take on the No. 2-ranked Fighting Sioux.
