The University of Denver women’s tennis team concluded the 2003 regular season last week with a 4-2 singles victory over non-conference opponent Colorado State University in Ft. Collins.
The women capped off their season record at 13-6 and 3-0 in the conference heading into the Sun Belt Conference tournament.
The No. 66 Pioneers are one of only two women’s tennis SBC teams to be nationally ranked, which marks Denver’s first season in the rankings.
South Alabama leads the conference and has a No. 12 ranking.
“South Alabama will be our greatest challenge in the tournament,” said Head Coach Dana Young. “There is a pretty big difference in the rankings between our team and South Alabama, but we certainly have nothing to loose.
“We should be the No. 2 seed in the tournament.”
When facing CSU last week, the teams did not play doubles due to poor weather, but sophomores Yanick Dullens and Barbara Kourim, and freshmen Suzana Maksovic and Jenny Trettin each won in two sets in their respective matches to give DU the advantage.
Dullens played No. 1 singles, defeating CSU’s Sanja Hansson, 6-4, 6-3, who was one win away from tying the Rams’ school record for singles wins. Maksovic’s 6-4, 6-4 win over CSU’s Dasha Zhurin in No. 2 singles improved her season record to an impressive 16-1.
“In most of the big matches that we’ve won, our (singles) wins have come from our No. 1, 2 and 3 spots,” Young said. So those three players, Yanick Dullens, Suzie Maksovic and Jenny Trettin, have constantly performed well day in and day out.”
Maksovic and Trettin have also joined forces to hold an undefeated 10-0 record in No. 2 doubles.
The SBC tournament runs tomorrow through Saturday in Mobile, Ala. DU’s match times and opponent(s) were yet to be determined at press time.
