If the future of the women’s soccer team was dependent upon the attitudes of this year’s freshmen, then it can be said that the future is bright for the University of Denver women’s soccer team. Freshman defense player Jessica Keller has a bright career that has already begun with the DU women’s soccer team. Keller, whose twin plays for the University of Colorado-Boulder women’s soccer team, is from Ralston Valley High School. She has always played alongside her twin, Nikki, and said that “it was weird but fun to play against her earlier this season.” The two sisters did not choose to go to different schools to be able to play each other, rather Jessica said, “We both felt that going to different schools would allow us to become more independent and less known as ‘the twins.'”Both stay close to their family and that is how they are able to stay grounded. “I talk to my sister every day, sometimes multiple times. We are still very close and we plan to stay that way,” Keller said. They both were given a limited selection for numbers, but they both ended up with the number 6, another connection that is credited to that special twin connection. The twins grew up playing almost every sport together, including baseball, soccer, basketball and track and field. Keller said, “Soccer was our favorite sport because it was our best sport.” Both enjoyed playing soccer and easily moved to a high level of competition based on the growth of their skills.Keller said she chose DU out of her three finalists. She had narrowed it down to University of Colorado, University of Denver and Indiana University. She felt most comfortable with DU because of the coaches, the size of the school, and the friendliness of the team. She indicated that once she committed to DU, she and her sister decided that “going to different schools allowed us to more comfortable with our teams and coaches.” The sisters played their first game against each other this fall, with neither of them earning bragging rights yet. The Pioneers tied the Buffaloes 2-2 (2OT). Looking at the battle during the game, it could be said that the Pioneers won the recruiting battle by getting Keller, since she held her sister scoreless when she was on the field.Keller looks forward to the next match against her sister, but she has plenty to do until they face off again. Jessica loves to ski during the winter, another activity she says she will do with her sister. She is also very dedicated to school and the team, mainly using her summer time to work out and condition for the season. Her plans for school are not completely decided, but she does want to become a special education teacher eventually. DU does not have an education degree, but she feels that majoring in psychology will help in her achieving her goals. Even if those plans change, Jessica will know that she will always have her twin by her side going through the same situations that she is.
