Finnish band H.I.M. (His Infernal Majesty), popularized by MTV reality star Bam Margera, played to a sold out crowd at the Ogden Theater Thursday night, continuing their worldwide tour. H.I.M., self described as “Love Metal” stopped in Denver, playing for their first time at the Ogden Theater. The band was joined by Skindread, a reggae punk band, and Finch. Skindread seemed to entertain the crowd, but Finch, which recently changed its sound and alienated its loyal listeners, seemed to anger the concert goers who constantly shouted requests for old songs and yelled angry remarks at the visibly annoyed band. By simply looking around the crowd, filled with 13 year olds wearing Bam T-shirts and concerned parents, it was obvious Finch was there to support the main act, H.I.M. At 10:30 p.m., H.I.M. took the stage. Although the prepubescent screams of glee would seem more appropriate at a Britney Spears concert, they seemed to excite Ville Valo, lead singer of the band. He took the stage with a huge smile on his face-most likely because they are not used to such a huge response in the U.S. H.I.M. proceeded to play an impressive show, fitting 20 songs in an hour and a half. The band’s song choices were perfect, as they played songs spanning their career. H.I.M. played many of their new hits including “Under the Rose,” “Killing Loneliness” and “Vampire Heart,” mixed with many of their older songs such as “Razor Blade Kiss,” “Poison Girl” and “Buried Alive by Love.” The band’s performance was heightened by a complicated light show which cast hues of light over the band and light designs over the crowd and ceiling. The feeling the band put into the songs was impressive. Valo constantly took huge drags of his cigarette before belting out lyrics, and lead guitarist Linde played aggressively and energetically, giving the band a powerful sound. The band also encouraged the crowd to sing during their more popular songs which seemed to energize the entire theater. H.I.M. performed an impressive show Thursday night that definitely warrants the growing following they have attracted.
