Lambda Chi Alpha members collected food for the North American Food Drive (NAFD) last Saturday morning.Every Lambda house participates in this philanthropy and picks up food for the hungry on the same day. This year the fraternity hopes to collect over three million pounds to make this the largest single day philanthropy ever sponsored by a fraternity.University of Denver’s Lambda Chi Alpha chapter collected 232,000 pounds of food last year, which was more then any other Lambda chapter. This year the Lambdas are hoping to do even better than that and raise 250,000 pounds of food for the needy. The person in charge of the event was Yann Benjamin, a member of Lambda.Benjamin coordinated with Lambda and set up routes all around Denver where paper bags donated from Safeway could be dropped off on doorsteps for people to donate food. Lambda spent much of last Saturday driving around and picking up those bags.Lambda will also be receiving some help from the other fraternities and sororities around campus. All of the fraternities and sororities agreed to place a box in their houses that they would be filling up with food.Lambda has planned to host an exchange with whichever sorority helps them out the most and will throw a pizza party for the fraternity which contributes the most food.Brian Kelley, president of the AUSA Senate and current president of Lambda was pleased with the effort and time that all of the brothers put forth for this philanthropy. “Last year we raised 232,000 pounds of food and this year we’re looking to do even better with 250,000 pounds of food. It has been a lot of work but it’s worth it to hold our position as the most successful Lambda Chi Alpha Chapter internationally at this philanthropy.”The purpose of the North American Food Drive is for the Lambda Chi Alpha chapters to make an impact on their local communities. Lambda is helping to feed the local hungry through the Denver Metro CareRing.Yann Benjamin said that Safeway and Leever’s Foods supported the drive by donating the bags. Benjamin was also grateful to his fellow brothers for all of their time and effort. The fraternity received support from the DU community, especially the other fraternities and sororities on campus.”It has been tough to collect large amounts of food in the aftermath of the hurricanes down south to which people donated so much food and money to, but the reason we are able to do this so well is because Denver is such a caring community which is very generous in helping others and the community here at DU is no different,” said Benjamin.Lambda will know whether or not they have met their goal of 250,000 pounds by this Saturday.
