When you sit down to watch a Jim Carrey movie, you have to remember not to think too hard. You’ll really enjoy it much more if you let yourself be lost in the ridiculousness of his slapstick humor.
“Bruce Almighty,” follows Bruce Nolan (Carrey), a ‘human interest’ television news reporter in Buffalo who is dissatisfied with his life and blames God (played effortlessly by the perfectly cast Morgan Freeman) for everything he believes is wrong with it.
It isn’t until a particularly bad day, when Nolan calls out for God to answer him and He does – offering Nolan a chance to do better by taking over for him while he’s on vacation.
Unfortunately, the writers can’t think of much for Carrey to do with the divine powers of God than what you’ve already seen in the trailer: he gives his girlfriend Grace (Jennifer Aniston) larger breasts, blows up random skirts and makes his dog pee in the toilet.
It isn’t until he has to answer millions of prayers a day that he finally finds the Almighty powers bothersome and worthless after he loses his girlfriend and can’t bend her free will (the only stipulation God had given Nolan along with His powers).
The film is carried by Carrey’s adlibbing and impeccable sense of timing, let suffers a bit in the story/plotline department. This is Carrey returning to the face his audience loves: clowning around with warped, kooky hilarity.
Director Tom Shadyac (“The Nutty Professor,” “Liar Liar”) keeps Carrey in the center of the fray, hardly leaving room for anyone else (including the thankless background role played by Aniston).
Overall, the film is just what you need for summer fun: brainless and entertaining with a smattering of special effects.
“Bruce Almighty” is rated PG-13 for language, sexual content and some crude humor.
