Thundering bass echoing across campus drew more than 100 students to the Driscoll Lawn last Wednesday.
Ten bands performed on the lawn as part of the May Days Music Fest, presented by DUPB and KVDU.
Ranging from Kinetix, a DU-based group, to Wreck of the Portland, a group based in Salt Lake City, a variety of music resonated and sometimes clashed for the six-hour concert.
“I’m hoping to get the DU kids to spread their musical ideas through the concert,” said Evan Friedman, the co-director of DUPB concerts and the KVDU music director.
Many of the performing groups were asked to play after being seen opening at concerts in Denver. Atlas, one of the bands participating, has in the past opened for Limbeck. Another band, The Swayback, once opened for The Secret Machines.
Bands were also contacted through KVDU connections.
The Hot IQs, also participating in the concert, produced the number one record played on KVDU, DU’s Internet radio station.
Though the event funded stage rentals and sound crews, the bands performed for free.
“We really thanked the bands for playing for free and enlightening the DU crowd of alternative rock,” said Friedman.
Kenny Shackelford and Tyler Johnson, members of Wreck of the Portland, traveled to Denver from Utah with their two fellow band members for the event. Spotted at a concert in Salt Lake, Friedman contacted the band and asked them to perform at DU.
“We are excited to spread our music to DU with the idea that we will spread better rock music,” said Shackelford. “We like the idea of spreading our music and having our music be used as a tool.”
The Music Fest was a part of May Days, a week-long event held on campus for the student body.
Along with the concert, inflatable games on Tuesday and the annual See Saw-a-thon on Thursday were provided free to DU students.
A charity ball hosted on Friday night culminated the week.
“I would love for the tradition to keep going,” said Friedman. “I hope we can continue to connect bands together.”
