Last Thursday at about 3 a.m., a man attempted to sexually assault a student on High Street near the intersection of Warren Avenue.

Orange flyers describing the incident have been posted all around campus telling students to be aware of the incident and asking them for assistance regarding the investigation.

The suspect is described as a Caucasian male that appeared to be “older than a student.” He is also said to have been between 5-feet-11 and 6-feet-1 inches tall and approximately 190 pounds.

According to the victim of the attempted assault, the man had blond hair in a buzz-cut style. Additionally, the suspect jumped out of a 1980s vintage van, possibly a minivan, just prior to the attempted assault.

The crime alert flyers also offer tips to students on how to avoid similar incidents.

Such tips include being alert and aware of your surroundings at all times, using the “buddy system” when walking on campus or nearby streets late at night. Students should also know where the blue-light emergency phones are and plan a route.

Ty Mills, associate director and spokesperson for Campus Safety said, “[Campus Safety] strongly encourages students to take advantage of the SafeRide program that runs from 7:30 p.m. – 2:30 a.m. nightly. Students can also take advantage of a Campus Safety office foot escort by calling us after the 2:30 a.m. end of SafeRide.

To receive an escort, students can call Campus Safety at (303) 871-3000.

Other tips that Mills offered were to park cars close to where people need to be, stay in well lit areas and to be careful about walking in the street or in areas that block nearby light and other areas shaded by shrubs or by other obstructions.

In addition, women can enroll in the Campus Safety – sponsored Rape Aggression Defense, or R.A.D., classes. For more information regarding these courses, contact Office Ray Juan at (303) 871-2139.

Currently, Campus Safety and the Denver Police Department have no leads on this case and do not believe that it is related to any other incidents near campus or anything else on-campus.

Campus Safety does however ask students with any information regarding the incident or other related type cases to contact Investigator Albert Monger at (303) 871-4226 or amonger@du.edu, or the Denver Police Department at (720) 913-2000.
