Evidently this page is lopsided.
It may not look like it from your angle, but let’s look at it again.
There have been claims made that there have been nothing but conservative viewpoints published on this page.
This could be a fair claim. The piece on President Bush two weeks ago is still getting letters to the editor, the bit about ANWR, and a few others have been central on the editorials page.
But this is not the conservative conspiracy in action by any means.
Liberal viewpoints, as always, are encouraged, and any member of our readership is encouraged to write in the form of an editorial piece on an issue or in a letter to the editor.
In the weeks where pieces on board with McGahey’s Navy included, DU hockey, ESPN, and other issues, there was nothing to be said by any of our readers and in fact readership on the editorials page was down.
But once politics is discussed, then everyone has a passionate opinion, right? I thought it would be the case.
Still, there are more letters to the editor, but no actual pieces written and no action taken by those complaining
Normally, there is a large ad on this page encouraging writing from anyone of 500 words or less, there just has been no response.
So when the other side does not take action, there is an avenue for those who are willing to take action.
The pages you have read over the past six weeks may be predominantly conservative, but for once the conservative is louder than the liberal.
There is no unbalance here, there is no lack of duty as a journalist, it is an editorials page. There has simply been no response or initiative from the left.
It was threatened that if this “unbalanced” page continues the way it is, it will lose its readership.
On the contrary, people from all different viewpoints have been sparked and readership has increased dramatically from when we wrote about Pioneer hockey and ESPN.
So please, if this page looks lopsided to you now, help do something about it.
Excuse the cliche, but everybody hears the squeaky wheel.
That is all recruits. Dismissed.
