Stastny plays in first All-Star game
Former DU hockey player Paul Stastny played in his first NHL All-Star game last Sunday afternoon at the RBC Center in Raleigh, N.C.
Stastny, an All-American at DU (2006), played for Team Staal in the game, recording the teams second goal of the game early in the first period.
He followed that with an assist on the team’s third goal as Team Staal jumped out to a 4-0 lead over Team Lidstrom. However Lidstrom’s squad stormed back to win 11-10.
This season, Stastny has recorded 42 points (17 goals, 25 assists) in 47 games, which ranks him No. 2 on the team behind teammate Matt Duchene. He ranks second on the club in power-play points (3 goals, 13 assts).
In 2008, Stastny was elected to appear in the NHL All-Star Game but was unable to play due to injury. At DU, he won a national title in 2005 and was named WCHA Rookie of the Year after his 45-point freshman season.
Women’s lacrosse picked second in preseason poll
DU women’s lacrosse team was picked to finish No. 2 behind Stanford in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation’s preseason poll.
Although they received 31 points, the Pioneers could not match the Cardinal.
Stanford collected 36 points and got six-first place votes, following their NCAA appearance in 2010.
The Cardinals have won six consecutive MPSF Championships, beating DU in last year’s final.
Behind the Pioneers there was a tie between California and Oregon for third place, with both teams earning 23 points and no first place votes; UC Davis, Saint Mary’s and Fresno State rounded out the poll.
DU finished 6-0 in MPSF play last season and with a 13-5 overall record before being beaten by Stanford in the MPSF Championship game.
