Springer, Hall finish in the top 40

 

Junior gymnast Brianna Springer finished 17th in the all-around competition this past weekend at the 2011 NCAA Championships semifinals in Cleveland, Ohio, her second appearance at the national tournament.

 

Springer finished the tournament with a score of 38.325 in the all-around. She scored a 9.775 on vault, 9.675 on beam, 9.600 on floor and 9.275 on bars.

 

She qualified for the tournament by finishing 5th in the NCAA North Central Regionals hosted here at DU on Apr. 2.

 

Heading into the tournament Springer led the Pioneers in the all-around competition at a score of 38.848, which had her tied for 21st in the nation.

 

Last year Springer finished 11th at the 2010 NCAA Championships semifinals.

 

Freshman Jorie Hall finished 35th on the balance beam in her first NCAA Championship appearance with a score of 9.575.

 

She qualified for the tournament in the NCAA North Central Regionals with a 9.900 to tie for the competition lead with Bekah Gher of Boise State University on April 2.

 

Both Springer and Hall with return to DU next season.

 

Vorkefeld named SBC player of the week

 

Jens Vorkefeld was named Sun Belt Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week this past week for the first time this season.

 

This also marked the 4th time that the Pioneers have had a player named Player of the Week.

 

Vorkefeld led the Pioneers to 4-3 victories over South Alabama and Central Florida. He has a six-match singles winning streak.
