On Oct. 20, the DU Thrift Store and the DU Fashion and Sewing Club joined forces to host the inaugural “jurse” workshop, a jean purse-making event. This entirely free workshop took place in DU’s Green Suite, room 1100 in Community Commons, from 3 to 6 p.m.

The room was abuzz with vibrant tables and a gathering of highly creative students. Each table had a unique theme. Among them was a table featuring four sewing machines manned by skilled tailors from the fashion and sewing club. Additionally, four other tables were designed for cutting denim, sewing and decorating.

The primary objective of this event was to inspire DU’s students to embrace recycling rather than discarding old clothing. It also served as an enjoyable experience, providing students with a stress relieving outlet, especially as the academic quarter is drawing to a close. Moreover, it offered learning opportunities for those students passionate about exploring the art of sewing, an essential hobby that supports sustainability and the reuse of materials. The emphasis of this event was on recycling rather than consigning clothing to the trash.

Participants had the opportunity to learn how to create their own jean purse using recycled denim, textiles, glitter glue, gems, lace and buttons. All materials were generously provided to students free of charge.

The event welcomed all students, regardless of their prior experience, as the fashion and sewing club members were on hand to guide, assist and support everyone.

This event encouraged students to try to form their creative visions into tangible denim projects.

The workshop ingeniously participated in promoting creativity within the DU community and fostered connections among students while instilling a mindset focused on regeneration and reusing resources to make special things.
