On November 2, the Denver men’s soccer team traveled to St. Charles, Mo. to take on the Lindenwood University Lions. It was the first matchup between the two teams in program history.

Denver got off to a strong start but failed to score on many attempts. That changed for the better when sophomore midfielder Sam Bassett (Littleton, Colo.) scored after 22 minutes of play for his first goal of the season. Soon after, he was yellow-carded but was able to stay in play. Lindenwood only had two shots on goal during the game and freshman goaltender Isaac Nehme (Colorado Springs, Colo.) had an amazing save with 11 minutes left in the half.

Freshman midfielder Holger Olsson (Stockholm, Sweden) scored early in the second half to set the momentum for Denver early. Olsson scored again just eight minutes later for his ninth goal of the season, which was assisted by Nehme. In the 74th minute, senior forward Kengo Ohira (Tokyo, Japan) found the back of the net to secure the 4-0 shutout for Denver. Junior defender Ronan Wynne (Auckland, New Zealand) got a yellow card in the 78th minute of the game.

Denver wrapped up the game with 10 shots on goal to Lindenwoods two and both teams ended the night with nine fouls.

With a 4-2 win against Western Illinois on Saturday, the Crimson and Gold are looking ahead to the Summit League Men’s Soccer Championship. The semifinal round on Thursday will be between DU and Omaha, and the winner of that game will advance to the final against the winner of the Oral Roberts vs. Kansas City semifinal game on Saturday at 2 p.m.
