A ballistic swing ride, dunk tank, inflatable slide and obstacle course were prominent fixtures on DU’s campus green last Wednesday, as students were treated to a surprise carnival event hosted by DUPB’s Explorations Committee. Hard to miss for those on campus between 2:00 p.m.-5:30 p.m., the 418 attendees also enjoyed provisions of snacks, popcorn, cotton candy, face painting, a Sweet Cow food truck and numerous carnival games and fun activities.

“My favorite part was seeing the committee’s abstract ideas come to life,” said Daly Carlson, co-chair of the Explorations Committee. “For this event, we had one committee member suggest that we have a surprise event! Typically for a DUPB event, we have detailed marketing on our Instagram and Crimson Connect to promote the event. This time, however, we wanted to provide a fun way to destress students prior to finals and we thought a midweek surprise would be a great way to do this!”

Undoubtedly, planning an occasion of this magnitude and maintaining its secrecy was a difficult task. “Daly and I met frequently outside of our weekly meetings to ensure everything was set in place. Working with outside vendors such as the Sweet Cow truck, the balloon artist and AirBound required a lot of attention to detail and management,” said Julia Paul, co-chair of the Explorations Committee.

Both Carlson and Paul emphasized the creativity, work and coordination on behalf of the committee to pull the event off.

As spring quarter draws to a close and summer break nears, DUPB and its committees begin to wrap up their events and activities for the 2021-2022 academic year. “As a graduating senior, this event was a really great way to close out my time on DUPB,” Carlson reflected.

Thinking big and pulling off events never done before is what Julia will miss about her experience. “It is such a special feeling to be able to bring happiness to other students around campus, and I am really going to miss providing those opportunities after graduation.”

DUPB’s Explorations Committee, dedicated to devising and providing unique, creative events for the DU community, undoubtedly has plenty to look forward to in the years to come.
