The following is a Letter to the Editor for the Opinions section.
To the Editor:
I know the incredible impact quality early learning has on a child’s mind, creativity, intellect and development. That is why I have chosen to pursue an M.A. in education at the University of Denver—to help young children get their best start in life and learning.
I am thrilled that this election season I will have the chance to vote in favor of universal preschool for all Colorado kids.
Proposition EE will be on the Colorado ballot this November, and it is a win-win for the future of our children. If passed, this measure would increase taxes on tobacco products and initiate expanded taxes on nicotine products—including vaping products.
In Colorado, 5,100 people die each year from smoking, and it is estimated that 91,000 kids currently under the age of 18 right now will eventually die from smoking. This is a public health crisis, and research shows that increasing the price of these products is one of the best ways to decrease use among youth.
Improving the health of Coloradans is a win, but Proposition EE would also be a significant investment in education. If passed, revenue from these taxes would begin funding a universal preschool program in 2023. Estimates show that over ten years, this measure would secure $2 billion for universal preschool in Colorado. These funds will ensure a minimum of ten hours of free, voluntary preschool to every child in Colorado in the year before they enter kindergarten.
High-quality early education has been proven to enhance academic, health and social outcomes for students and prepare them to enter kindergarten. Currently, the Colorado Preschool Program (CPP) only has funding to serve 40 percent of eligible students. This tax revenue would fund a first-in-the-nation approach to preschool that is both universal and targeted, setting up all Colorado kids and families for success.
This is why I urge DU students to vote yes on this measure in November. By voting yes, we can ensure every child in Colorado has a strong start in life and that Colorado has a strong future.
Sincerely,
