The University of Denver women’s gymnastics team had yet another stand-out performance on Sunday afternoon against George Washington University. The no. 5 Pioneers tied their season-high score of 197.425 and took home a first-place finish in every event. Senior Maddie Karr (Stillwater, Minn.) had an unbelievable night, finishing first on the vault, bars, and the floor. Karr was also first all-around and tied the program’s all-around record with a 39.775. Sophomore Alexis Vasquez (Arcadia, Calif.) had an impressive performance with her second perfect score on the beam this season that led the team to a new program record in that event. 

On the vault, the Pioneers swept the podium with a first, second and third-place finish. Karr took first with a 9.900, while juniors Lynnzee Brown (Kansas City, Mo.) and Emily Glynn (Longmont, Colo.) took second and third with a 9.875 and a 9.825, respectively. The top three were also closely followed by Denver freshman AK Subject (Wayzata, Minn.) and sophomore Alexandria Ruiz (Lake Mary, Fla.) who both scored a 9.775 to be part of a four-way tie for fourth. 

As the Pioneers moved onto the bars, Karr continued her impressive night with a 9.975 that earned her another first-place finish. Brown and Glynn tied for second with a 9.925 and Subject took third with a 9.900. To follow the three podium finishers, Ruiz took fourth with a 9.850 and Lockhart fifth with a 9.825. As a team, the Pioneers beat the program record in this event with a 49.575 to top the previous record of 49.525.

Once on the beam, the Pioneers set yet another program record with a 49.650. Vasquez had her second perfect score of the season in this event and earned the first place title, while Karr placed second with a 9.950 to tie her career-best. Ruiz and Brown tied for third with a 9.925, a new personal best for each gymnast. 

On the floor, Karr took home her final first place title with a 9.950. Glynn and Lockhart tied for second with a 9.850 while George Washington University took home the third-place finish. Both Karr and Glynn tied their personal best in this event.

Karr won the all-around title with a record-tying 39.775 and Ruiz finished second all-around with a 39.200. The meet was an impressive showing for all the Denver gymnasts and the entire team worked to push this year’s team to a record-beating performance. 

The University of Denver women’s gymnastics looks to carry on their momentum as they host BYU on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 6 p.m. MST.
