Television viewers have been craving an entertaining talent competition for some time now. Netflix’s new series, “Rhythm + Flow,” delivers just that. While the show has the usual qualities of a singing competition like  auditions, critical judges and emotional backstories, it also brings new life to the competition genre that is unlike anything we’ve seen before.

The show is produced by John Legend and stars Cardi B, T.I. and Chance the Rapper as its celebrity judges. The series also features guest appearances from artists such as Snoop Dogg, Quavo and the late Nipsey Hussle. The artists comb through multiple cities across the country looking for the next big hip-hop star.

While the show has basically the exact same format as previous shows such as “American Idol” or “The X Factor,” the fact that the series focuses solely on the rap and hip-hop genres makes it stand out from the rest. The contestants also have diverse backgrounds and unique styles which makes it easy for viewers to root for their favorites.

The main difference between this series and others like it is that in “Rhythm + Flow,” viewers do not get to vote for their favorite contestants, as the fate of the aspiring stars are in the hands of the judges. Yet, Netflix still manages to keep viewers eager for more by releasing the episodes in three part segments.

Since this is Netflix’s first attempt at a reality competition series, ratings will be crucial to see whether or not more shows like this will be available on the platform in the future. Thanks to the lovable energy of Cardi B along with the countless other celebrity appearances and the excited and hopeful contestants, this series is sure to be a hit. The first three episodes were released on Oct. 9, and the next three episodes are set to be released on Wednesday, Oct. 16.
