DU is known for having a renowned music program through the Lamont School of Music, along with students who are passionate about their field of study. In August 2018, Lamont gained a new director of music, Dr. Keith Ward. Dr. Ward is an accredited pianist and current president of the College Music Society. He is also the seventh director of Lamont since the school was founded in 1924.

“DU really has a variety of programs,” said Dr. Ward, “from the steel drum ensemble, to spiritual music and experimental jazz, the campus scene is vibrant and incredibly diverse.”

Dr. Ward described his excitement for upcoming performances put on by the Newman Center. Whether it be various ensembles or performances by faculty or guest musicians, DU is host to hundreds of events per year.

“Every event and performance this year is sure to be great, although I’m personally excited for Pat Metheny,” said Dr. Ward. “There are just so many great events waiting to be discovered.”

Students involved in any of Lamont’s programs at DU are just as passionate about the music scene on campus. Carl Berner, a sophomore jazz studies major from Cleveland, Ohio, is a member of the Lamont Jazz Orchestra. The orchestra is currently performing in the Monterey Jazz Festival in California. However, along with performing with the jazz orchestra, Berner is also a member of the popular student band, The Tonics. The Tonics are known for having performed at the 2018 DUPB MusicFest.

“Being in the city of Denver makes DU’s music scene unique,” said Berner. “There are so many young musicians and bands and jazz jams happening every day of the week.”

Whether students are interested in classical music, jazz, voice or even student bands, there is sure to be a program on campus for every genre.

As for the future of the music program at DU, Dr. Ward is excited for what is ahead.

“If changes happen within the music program, I would like them to be evolutionary instead of revolutionary,” said Dr. Ward. “The Lamont School of Music deserves national recognition, and I hope to further develop our program to achieve that status.”
