After starting the first four weeks of the season with four wins, the last two weeks for the Denver Broncos has seen them compile a two-game losing streak. Most recently, they fell to one of their division rivals, the San Diego Chargers, on Oct. 13 in San Diego (21-13).

When the season began, Denver was fresh off of legendary quarterback Peyton Manning’s retirement and the fate of the Broncos was in question. With that, someone else had to step up to the plate. For most of the season, that has been second-year quarterback Trevor Siemian, who has a 4-1 record this year.

Siemian started the first four weeks strong, but after a shoulder injury against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Oct. 2, second string rookie quarterback Paxton Lynch took his place. The Broncos’ four-game win streak was officially lost when the Broncos fell to the Atlanta Falcons (23-16) on Oct. 9 as Lynch made his first career start for the injured Siemian.

When Siemian rallied to battle against the Chargers the following week, the Broncos did not have their usual mojo and fell to the Chargers in a disappointing loss. The Broncos had not lost to the Chargers since 2013.

Despite struggles in the offense and what the Denver Post calls a “run game stuck in reverse,” the Broncos still have one thing going for them: defense.

Last season, defense was ultimately what led the Broncos to their Super Bowl win, with outside linebacker Von Miller taking home the title of Super Bowl 50 Most Valuable Player. This year, Miller has continued to excel on the defensive line, stacking up as second in the league for sacks (7.5).

This season, in the team rankings, the Broncos are slotted in the top five for two defensive categories. They are ranked second for total defense (yards per game), and are at the top of the list for passing yards allowed per game.

On Monday, Oct. 24, the Broncos defeated the Houston Texans, and former Broncos quarterback Brock Osweiler, in a 27-9 win at Sports Authority Field to end their two-game lose streak.
