From April 7-8, DU hosted its second annual Sexual Assault Awareness Month Summit. The summit began with a presentation by keynote speaker Andrea Gibson at 7 p.m. in Davis Auditorium, and then ran from 9 a.m. to its last event at 2:45 p.m. the following day, all of which took place in the Driscoll Ballroom and Chambers Center.

The event was comprised of a breakfast, introductory remarks and then a series of three sessions with options of various workshops, followed by a call to action. The workshops, numbering nine in total, covered a wide variety of topics including facts about gender violence, transgender and non-conforming students and sexual assault, sexual assault in the military, supporting survivors and more.

The theme of this year’s event was “Beyond the Single Story: Strengthening our Understanding of Gender, Sexuality and Violence,” which, according to the HCC’s website, sought to “deepen and complicate the narratives around the intersectionality of gender, sexuality and gender-based violence.”

The event is right in the middle of the HCC’s Sexual Assault Awareness Month event schedule, which began the week of March 21 with volunteers decorating shirts for the Clothesline Project, which “provides awareness about sexual and intimate partner violence, hate crimes and child abuse” (decorated shirted will be displayed in the Anderson Academic Commons for the entirety of April) and will conclude with Denim Day Capture the Flag on April 27, with a variety of different events going on in between.
