It has been over 30 years since Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assasinated at a Tennessee motel, but people are still celebrating his dreams and legacy.
Events honoring King will take place this week both on the DU campus and around the state of Colorado.
On Monday, the Denver “marade,” a combination march and parade, took place beginning in Denver City Park. The Denver marade is one of the largest Martin Luther King Jr. marches in the United States, often drawing upwards of 30,000 participants. The theme of this year’s marade was “A Drum Major for Peace: A Tribute to Justice.”
Tonight, the University of Denver will be holding the “Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration” at 6 p.m. in Davis Auditorium in Sturm Hall.
The celebration will include a showing of the documentary “Citizen King,” produced and directed by Orlando Bagwell, whose other film credits include “Africans in America” and “Malcolm X: Make It Plain.”
“Citizen King” is an exploration of the personal life of the public leader of the Civil Rights Movement. The film focuses on the last five years of King’s life, and includes interviews with friends of King, members of the movement, journalists, law enforcement officers and historians.
The documentary lasts two hours. After the film, the audience will be able to dialogue with Bagwell. Faculty members are encouraged to give credit to any students who attend the event.
The event is sponsored by the Center for Multicultural Excellence, the Office of the Provost, the Center for African American Policy, The Spirituals Project, the African American Alumni Association, the Black Student Alliance, the Color of Justice and the Veterans of Hope Project.
On Jan. 26, the Concerts on Colfax series will present a celebration of Dr. King at noon at the Fox Arts Center in Aurora. For more information, call their box office at 303-739-1970.
