Sweet Action might not sound like the name of a hipster hotspot, especially hipsters that don’t crave the lactose heavy desserts. But simply put, this ice cream parlor exudes originality with their flavor choices, their decor and their overall atmosphere.
Located right on 52 Broadway St., Sweet Action is surrounded by all things indie. Situated next to Sol tattoo parlor and across the street from Buffalo Exchange, a coffee shop and The Hornet Bar down the street, it is the perfect place to grab some late-night dessert or an afternoon delight.
The ice cream parlor’s exterior is unassuming, adorned with parked fixie bikes and tucked in between the other stores on the street, but inside it stands out. The front is made up of a large window garage door that opens up onto Broadway Street.
Step inside and the large white walls are decorated with a chalk board featuring the daily flavor choices and the rest of the walls are lined with eclectic prints of cars, rainbows and animals all in black frames. The tables are covered with plastic printed tablecloths of all different patterns and colors.
If you opt out of sitting at the round tables, try taking a seat at the stainless steel bar near the front that becomes the perfect place to people watch as couples pass by and straddlers stand outside smoking cigarettes.
Sweet Actions’ group of customers is almost as eclectic as its’ flavors; a group of three girlfriends, a heavily pierced and tattooed couple and a dad with his children.
People wait in line as they are served from tattooed employees who are happy to let anyone try as many flavors as they want, considering just how unique their flavors are.
If you are a hipster that likes the plain and simple, then get ready to step out of your comfort zone.
With flavors like five spice, buttered popcorn, zagnut and Colorado peach, these flavors are anything but mainstream.
The flavors change on a daily basis and their ice cream is au natural, using only natural Colorado dairy and fresh ingredients.
For the vegetarian and vegan loving customers, Sweet Action offers two vegan flavors a day, including the vegan peanut butter and jelly and the vegan toasted coconut.
While two vegan flavors might seem a little limited, they have a well-stocked fridge that houses various vegan ice cream sandwiches, including the vegan chocolate chip cookie with vegan vanilla ice cream.
For the beer-loving hipster, the double chocolate stout ice cream is a necessity, especially since the stout is sourced locally from a brewery in Fort Collins and the Bailey’s Irish cream and the Stranahan’s whiskey brickle will fulfill any alcohol lover’s taste buds.
Sweet Action’s philosophy is less about the topping choices and more about the flavors. They do offer chocolate sprinkles and nuts or chocolate sauce, but their specialities remain in the ice cream itself.
Made fresh daily, these flavors can stand alone without any extra fixings, although the homemade waffle cones do add the perfect crunch to any scoop.
Despite its’ deceiving name, this ice cream shop is a hipster’s dessert heaven.
