Undergraduate Student Government (USG) was back in session this week following the first Presidential Debate.

On Wednesday, September 26, USG swore in Parya Mahmoudi and Jack Patterson, the two new sitting freshman senators on the USG board. Over a dozen freshman political hopefuls from the class of 2016 gathered at the Driscoll Underground to hear the results for the two freshman positions available. Many of the candidates had prior experience in student governments. About 360 students voted; both candidates won by a clear margin.

In addition to planning the Art 4 Aurora campagin, USG and students are also gearing-up for the hockey season. The annual Hockey Campout was last weekend, Friday night until Saturday at 8 p.m. According to Estenson, the Senate voted down a bill to give every senator a season hockey ticket this year. The bill was proposed by two or three senators, and the ticket tradition was voted down by a margin of one vote.

“Parker and I thought that that wasn’t a good use of student activity fees, ” said Estenson.

Estenson also said he would like to expand the opportunities for USG senators beyond hockey, although several senators still want tickets.

“We are working on a bill to decrease the number and change the tickets to be a wider array of events (other than hockey),” said Estenson. “For example, more Lamont events and major speakers.”

The sustainability committee is also joining forces with hockey and is looking to plan a ‘zero waste’ hockey game later this season.

The USG also announced that the DU Bookstore is looking for a partner for their grand opening during Homecoming Week in late October. Estenson is referring interested student groups to the library.

“They want groups to come out and table for their grand opening,”said Estenson. “We’re looking for supporters for their grand opening for next week.
