May Days, DU’s annual spring celebration, which takes place this week, kicked off yesterday and continues all this week with a “Through the Decades” theme, culminating with GLOWfest on Sunday.

Today will feature a 1960’s Hawaiian Luau, where a “Taste of Hawaii” dinner will be served from 6:30-9:30 p.m. in the Humanities Garden behind Mary Reed. The dinner, which will offer roast pig, sushi and Hawaiian desserts, will also provide real flower lei-making and a professional hula show.

DUPB’s 16-person all-student Traditions Committee chose this year’s theme, “Through the Decades,” which spans from the 1950s to the 2000s. Movie prizes will be awarded each day to those best dressed to suit the theme.

The Vietnamese Student Alliance, Club Volleyball and other student groups will host competitions and tournaments such as volleyball, lawn games and a Vietnamese shuttle cock game tomorrow from 2-5 p.m. on Driscoll Green, part of a “1970s World of Sports” theme. Asbury Green and Vista Lofts will also provide Free Gatorade, 5 Hour Energy shots and Power Bars.

DUPB will be celebrating a 1980s-themed “Totally Rad Time” party this Thursday, where students can eat free pancakes for the Chris Cakes Pancake Breakfast at Sturm Hall from 9:30 a.m.-11 a.m. A cupcake truck will drive around campus during the day handing out free cupcakes from 2 p.m. until they run out. DUPB will stage an outdoor showing of “Back to the Future” at 8 p.m. DUPB will also be handing out popcorn in May Days-themed popcorn buckets.

DU’s Club Cross Country will host the Fanny Pack Fun Run on Friday to tie into the 1990s fanny pack fashion trend. The student-only 5K run/walk kicks off on Carnegie Green at 4:30 p.m. and costs $5, which includes a Chipotle burritto and a T-shirt. All proceeds will go to team sports. Air Dubai will perform in the Humanities Garden at 5:15 p.m., and free food will be served at the concert. A 90s-themed karaoke competition will take place after the show.

Urban Excursions, part of Late Night @ DU’s programming, offered $10 discounted  tickets to Elitch Gardens, which are now sold out. The tickets are valid for any regular operating day during 2012, but DUPB encourages students to go this Saturday.

The weekend will wrap up with GLOWfest in the Gates Field House at 7 p.m., with performances by Sebastian Ingrosso, Otto Knows, Kap Slap and Hujje.

Tickets are $25 while supplies last; students can buy them online from DUPB’s Facebook page.

Over 40 student organizations were present at the 1950s-themed “Rockin’ n Rollin'” Carnival yesterday, which took place from 11:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on Driscoll Green.

Over 500 students attended the event, which offered carnival games, a giant slide, funnel cakes, lemonade, henna tattoo artists and corn dogs. Prizes given away included T-shirts, glow sticks, kites and frisbees..

“We hope students come away from May Days feeling revitalized for their finals week, excited to be a Pioneer and proud of the traditions that our school has to offer,” said Sam Estenson, Undergraduate Student Government (USG) president-elect.
