The Math Center in Penrose Library helps more than 70 students each day.

The center opened at the beginning of this year and saw around 60 visitors on its first day, a number that increases daily.

“The idea behind the Math Center was to create a central location for students to get the help they need,” said Drew Ash, a second-year graduate student and teaching assistant for the calculus series.

Math tutoring was previously held in John Greene and Mary Reed halls.

“We used to have four to 12 kids in one room with one white board,” says Ash. The new Math Center has room for around 30 students and more equipment.

Students need the most help with business calculus and calculus one, said Ash.

“We do our best to help students in science classes too. Sometimes we’ll have people who need help with something like chemistry. I don’t know much about chemistry itself, but I can still help students figure out equations,” said Ash.

Any student is welcome at the Math Center, but it caters mostly to freshmen and sophomores, according to Ash. Its location on the first floor of Penrose Library makes it easily accessible for students that live on-campus.

The Math Center is open from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 9 a.m. until noon on Fridays. Peak visiting hours are between 1 and 7 p.m.

“We’ve been stretched pretty thin recently,” said Ash. A difficulty is planning the Math Center’s hours around the schedule of the teaching assistants.
