Fridays @ DU, designed for high school and transfer students considering DU, will be held in the Cable Center, its newest location, for the first time Friday.
The program has been held in multiple locations in the past depending on the size of the group, including University Hall, the Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management building and Davis Auditorium at Sturm Hall.
Past years saw an average of 90 attendees at each session, including prospective students and guests.
Last year, the average number was closer to 150, and at one event there were close to 400 people, said Shanna Pomager, senior associate director and campus visit coordinator for all visit programs.
“We knew that our numbers were increasing,” said Pomager.
With the move to the Cable Center, the program can now accommodate even the largest groups.
“Before we had to turn families away occasionally,” said Pomager.
The Cable Center also is convenient, easy to get to from the highway and has lots of parking, said Pomager.
There are currently 80 students registered for the Oct. 15 session, which means around 200 will probably come, she said.
The number of students interested in DU is probably increasing because the university is becoming much more well-known nationally and internationally. Also, winning hockey championships, the study abroad program and the popularity of Denver itself is contributing to the increase, said Pomager.
The Fridays @ DU visit program is slightly more extensive than a daily visit. It includes an information session, a tour of campus, a presentation on academics by a faculty member and lunch in a residence hall.
There are 16 sessions held throughout the year. Fridays @ DU is open to all interested students and their families, they do not have to be admitted to attend.
