The University of Denver’s women’s basketball team finally won its first Sun Belt Conference game of the season against Arkansas State University with a score of 57-46 on Thursday evening in Magness Arena.
The Pioneers were led by junior center Sara Bents, who recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. This victory also gave the DU women’s team its 100th SBC win in its ninth season.
“Our offensive execution was much better,” said Head Coach Pam Tanner, explaining how the game differed from other conference games. “Our defense intensity carried over from Sunday’s game. We were strong on both sides.”
The Pioneers (6-11, 1-5 SBC) had two players in addition to Bents who scored in double-figures. They were senior guard Brooke Meyer and senior Alisha Godette, with 11 and 16 points, respectively.
“Alisha Godette hit the line 17 times and made 12 of her free throws. She had a solid second half,” said Tanner. “Celena Otero broke her nose at practice yesterday and still gave us 22 minutes.”
Otero had to wear a facemask while playing.
Denver led the ASU Lady Indians (10-9, 5-3 SBC) by as much as 17 points in the second half and converted 13 points off ASU turnovers. Also, the Pioneers managed to get 25 points off the bench compared to the Lady Indian’s 15 from the bench.
Denver is able to finally have a week off before traveling to Boca Raton, Fla., to play Florida Atlantic at Lynn University on Thursday. Then on Sunday, the team will takes on South Alabama in Mobile, Ala.
