Editor’s note: Kaetlyn Murdoch is a freshman mechanical engineering major who has the second most points and rebounds on the team.
Laura Hathaway: What made you start playing basketball?
Kaetlyn Murdoch: We always played outside, my family is big outdoor people, and we always played basketball and volleyball. So I just fell in love with it, especially in middle school, and it really just became my passion and volleyball is another one of my passions, but I just clicked with the basketball group.
LH: Growing up, did you ever think about playing Division I women’s basketball?
KM: I actually never thought about that until high school. A lot of my friends that were juniors when I was a freshman were getting recruited and it looked like something amazing to do and that’s when it came to me that I wanted to do that.
LH: What made you decide to play basketball for DU?
KM: I looked at a couple different schools but this school, the academics and especially the team, the team is amazing. Every single person is different, but they are all funny and I really noticed that because a lot of teams have drama and this team is amazing. I have never been on team that is this well gelled.
LH: I heard you have unusaul arms. Can you explain why they are unique?
KM: I guess there is a formula where the length of your arms is supposed to be the same as your height. I am only 5 feet 11 inches and my arm span is 6 feet 3 inches so they are like four inches more than they’re supposed to be, so two inches on each side. They are abnormally long.
LH: What made you realize that your arms were so long?
KM: When I raised my hand in class one time in middle school and somebody said, “Dang your arms are long” and I just said, “Oh, okay” and that’s when I noticed they were really long. It was kind of embarrassing.
LH: Do you think having longer arms helps you on the basketball court?
KM: It helps to be able to block people even though I am not as close to them. The length of them really does help.
LH: What are your goals?
KM: My goal is just to help the team in whatever way they want, whatever they need. If my role is to be out there every game or be on the bench, it doesn’t matter to me as long as we are winning and we’re happy.
LH: Tell me about the pink streaks in your hair.
KM: That was just for today. I always have blue in it or a funky color but I thought today since it was ‘Think Pink’ that I would do it.
