The internet has evolved heavily since its inception. What started as a few military computers linked by thick cables that couldn’t reach dial-up speeds has become a monstrous network of computers across the globe able to communicate with one another almost instantaneously.
The potential for information sharing and the expansion of one’s mind through exposure to such vast stores of knowledge is almost too much to take.
It’s only natural that we use it mostly for pornography, pirating media and trading conspiracy theories.
The Internet is the single greatest purveyor of sleaze in our generation. The unfortunate truth of the matter is that, given its accessibility, every sort of scum you can imagine is online and swapping pictures of Emma Watson’s infamous upskirt photo as we speak.
TV shows like “To Catch a Predator” bank on the fact that they can find pedophiles propositioning children in allegedly safe chatrooms. The Internet is famous for being host to crackpots, sleazebags and other such dregs of society.
While in the past parents might have scanned the playground parking lot for a creepy van with the phrase “free candy” spray painted on the side and a man in a dirty clown suit in the driver’s seat, now they must scan their children’s chat history to make sure they haven’t caught the attention of child predators. As the old saying goes, “nobody knows you’re a dog on the Internet.”
The Internet is a wonderful resource, but it is also filled to the brim with the most terrible sorts of people. And so we finally come to real point this article is trying to make: the quickest way to prove to everyone how dumb you are is by posting something personal on the Internet.
My point is that, while the Internet is a wonderful resource for information and serves well for social networking, more often than not it will be turned to satiate the darker desires of humanity.
Therefore, if you have created something that you never want to see the light of day, the last place you want to put it is on the Internet.
While celebrities and the like certainly can’t control what’s posted about them, private citizens have every opportunity to protect themselves. You are responsible for the content you post. Don’t be surprised if the video you tape gets posted and ends up a viral hit. It’s your responsibility to keep your private issues private.
